FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between chemical & mineral based sunscreen?
There are two types of sunscreen available, know which one is good for you and the environment and which isn’t:
- Chemical based sunscreen contains chemical substances such as oxybenzone, which not only allows for a chemical reaction on your skin to deflect UV rays away, but also causes damage to our marine environment.
- Mineral based sunscreen contains no chemicals, rather natural ingredients known as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These ingredients deflect UV rays as they hit the skin without the need for a chemical reaction.
What does SPF actually mean?
SPF (sun protection factor) is a measure of how much protection a person is given from the UV rays once it has been applied. An SPF of 30 will provide around 30 times the protection of no sunscreen, and we advise it be reapplied after 40 minutes. An SPF of 50 will give you around 50 times the protection of no sunscreen and we advise it also be reapplied after 40 minutes.
What SPF sunscreen do we suggest?
For extended, intense exposure, a broad spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is advised. SPF 30 filters out up to 97% of the sun’s UV radiation, while SPF 50 filters out up to 98% of the sun’s UV radiation.
