What oxybenzone is doing to the environment

Oxybenzone’s hazardous effects on coral have been investigated before. Yuhas refers to a 2015 study that was published in Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology. He explains how, in this study, “biologists found that oxybenzone contributes to bleaching, has a similar effect on DNA to gasoline, and disrupts reproduction and growth, leaving young corals fatally deformed.”

Action has been taken to combat this damage. In 2018, Hawaii passed a bill banning the use of reef-killing sunscreens.
